[#21] (Explosive) cooperation, (social) dilemmas, and (voluntary) sacrifices
In the second part, Onkar raised the topic of volunteering in Academia. In the days preceding the talk, we tweeted about a form to be filled out in order to have an idea of what volunteering means for our community - and Onkar analyzed the results.
80% of the respondents were PhD students. A worrying 40% felt exploited during volunteering work, and more than half would volunteer more if compensated in some way.
These are just a few of the key results of the form. We concluded the session with two big questions to solve: how to diffuse the importance of volunteering? Do you consider reviewing papers as volunteering? Share your thoughts on Bluesky!
