Social brains and shape‑shifting scholarship were at the heart of this seminar with Haily Merritt, Postdoctoral Researcher at the Network Science Institute, Northeastern University London. In the first part, Haily presented a complex systems approach to neuroscience, while in the second half, we reflected on how to remain genuinely multidisciplinary while still being understandable and identifiable across very different academic disciplines.

In this seminar, we had the pleasure of hosting Louis Boucherie to explore how geography shapes the structure of human mobility. While mobility research has long shown that people make many short trips and only a few long ones, this work revealed that these patterns cannot be understood without considering the geography of cities.

Can we find polarizing users in flame wars? In this seminar, Elena Candellone (Utrecht University), presented network embedding methods for online social interactions and opened a discussion on the benefits of organizing scientific events and initiatives.

Should I specialize or should I stay generalist? In this seminar, we hosted William Thompson (University of Vermont, Burlington, USA), who presented his work on learning kernel-based opinion dynamics models from data and led a discussion on the challenges of navigating an interdisciplinary research path.

In this seminar, we had the pleasure of hosting Samuel Martin-Gutierrez (Complexity Science Hub) to discuss how social categories like race or socioeconomic status shape the way we form connections, and the challenges of publishing and presenting interdisciplinary research.

In our last seminar, we had the pleasure of hosting Helcio Felipe, a PhD candidate from the Central European University, as well as running our first (unofficial) hybrid seminar, with in-person attendees in Vienna!
